Why does my water heater not work as well as it used to?

Your water heater most likely is not working as well as it used to due to a sediment buildup in a tank, although there are other possible causes as well. Over time, water heaters accumulate sediment and lime deposits. If those deposits are not removed periodically, the sediment will create a barrier between the burner and the water and subsequently require more fuel to deliver hot water, thus resulting in your water heater’s poor performance. Call Pro Plumbing Air & Electric to have one of our trusted plumbers help resolve the issue.

What is the best temperature to set my water heater at?

The best temperature to set your water heater at is the standard manufacturer’s pre-setting, which is typically around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. When adjusting the temperature on a Gas Water Heater, there is a dial on the front of the gas valve which allows you to do so. With Electric Water Heaters, look on the side of the tank behind the two panels to find the suggested temperatures. It’s important to turn off all electricity to your Electric Water Heater before removing these panels and adjusting the setting to the recommended temperature.

How do I maintain my water heater?

The most important thing you can do to maintain your water heater is to drain and flush your water heater’s tank at least once a year. When draining and flushing your water heater, it’s important to remember that you’re dealing with very hot water and to always make sure to read any warnings and instructions on your water heater. Depending on whether or not you have an electric or gas water heater, shut off the electricity or turn off the gas as well as the water supply to your unit. Secondly, find the drain valve and connect a hose to it. The other end of the hose will be draining out very hot water, so make sure it is draining somewhere that can handle extreme temperatures. Next, make sure the pressure relief valve is open and release the drain valve so the dirty water can drain out into a nearby drain. This process can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size of your water heater and how much sediment has accumulated. After you’ve finished these steps, close the relief and drain valves and turn the water supply back on. Make sure either the gas or electricity remains off while the unit begins to refill. After the tank is full, turn the power back on to your unit. While you can do this process yourself, you can always have a certified plumber at Pro Plumbing Air & Electric drain and flush your water heater for you as well.
